Reduced Carbon Footprint

Alaska presents one of the most pristine environments in the world with robust regulatory protections to protect it. Nordic-Calista’s customers trust us to operate within those parameters and to help them find ways to minimize greenhouse gasses. Nordic-Calista rigs are designed to run on high line electrical power to minimize emissions.

The technology allows Nordic-Calista rigs to run in parallel high line electric power and diesel engines, providing cleaner solutions for our customers with fewer fossil fuels burned to reduce negative impacts of climate change.

Efficiency

We strive for time-efficient, effective collaboration with our customers and employees and weave it into our daily work environment with frequent communications between the right people regarding things that matter. The result is a tough rig which performs well in extreme weather conditions.

Nordic-Calista has designed and built four Arctic single-module, self-propelled rigs, designed primarily for workovers, but with diverse features to meet drilling challenges head on.

RIGS 1 & 2 - Single Module, Self-Propelled

Nordic-Calista Rigs 1 and 2 are single module, self-propelled, cantilevered workover/ light drilling rigs, allowing for the integration of coiled tubing equipment for a complete solution. No separate CT unit is required because the rig can do it all.

Innovative, Integrated Design

The integration of the coiled tubing equipment, fluid pumps and tanks, hoisting capacity, and central power generation (option for high line power) into one single module winterized unit, providing:

  • Smaller carbon footprint
  • Reduced spill potential
  • Reduced exposure of personnel to harsh conditions
  • Reduced non-productive time due to weather
  • Reduced rig up time
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced personnel requirement

Nordic-Calista Rigs 1 and 2 have performed over 1,000 sidetracks and have pioneered the use of managed pressure drilling (MPD) systems in Arctic conditions.

RIG 3 - Single Module

Nordic-Calista Rig 3 offers a single module design, perfect for exploration work, providing:

  • Reduced spill risk due to the inherent spill containment within one module, and the absence of interconnects between modules with modular rigs. Rig 3 was designed to work with oil-based mud, including refrigerated mud systems, without environmental impact.
  • Fast rig up time on location. On a recent well, the rig was moved over the well and accepted five hours after arriving on location. This compares to 10 – 14 days needed to rig up and test a more modular rig.
  • Reduced startup delays. Most systems are tested and commissioned in Deadhorse, prior to mobilization.

RIG 4 - AC-Powered

Nordic-Calista Rig 4 is an AC-powered, 1,500 HP, 700,000 Lbs. hook load drilling and workover unit which was built and commissioned in late 2017 to work for a client’s North Slope Alaska operations. It provides:

  • A walker system to move between wells
  • Rig can be disassembled into 200,000 lb. loads to be transported via non-grounded ice roads.
  • Is specially equipped with a central driller’s control station, HMI interface, zone management (anti-collision system), and robotics to increase performance, decrease risk, and improve overall efficiency.

In 2022, Nordic-Calista Rig 4 operated 97 days on highline power, which translates to 29,100 gallons of diesel saved, and 259 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions avoided.

Local Hire

As a 100% Alaska Native-owned company, Nordic-Calista recognizes it is strengthened by a diverse workforce that is trained to the high standards of efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance that North Slope operators expect.

Our policy is to select, place, train and promote the most qualified individuals based upon relevant factors such as work quality, and attitude and experience, so as to provide equal employment opportunity for all employees When applicable, Nordic-Calista’s policy of non-discrimination applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including but not limited to, recruiting, hiring, training, transfer, promotion, placement, layoff, compensation, termination, reduction in force and benefits.

Nordic-Calista also has in-house consulting resources available, which specialize in local community outreach services to engage stakeholders, recruit and promote local hire, and to train and develop a targeted resident workforce for your project.

Cost Controls

Project costs are always a concern, but particularly when the energy markets are unpredictable. Cost savings can make your project more profitable but not it they negatively impact the efficiency, safety or reliability of your operation.

Nordic-Calista controls costs within our working parameter and takes steps to ensure we can minimize them in the most effective manner without sacrificing efficiency or a safe working environment. Our low RTIR and NPT rates demonstrate this.

We manage costs via:

  • Managing critical spares & inventory – having right tools & spares when you need them
  • Preventative and Predictive Maintenance of equipment – reduce NPT
  • Supply Chain and Logistics – more options in unpredictable times
  • Fit-For-Purpose Design – engineered solutions
  • Inclusive Solutions – expertise and inclusive pricing
  • Performance Incentives – to reward safe, effective performance
